World Oral Health Day 2023

20 March 2023 | Media Release

The World Dental Foundation extends an invitation to participate in World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2023, which occurs annually on March 20th, to alleviate the burden of oral diseases worldwide.

Oral illnesses affect a significant number of individuals, with an estimated 3.5 billion people globally impacted, rendering it the most common health condition. This can cause pain, discomfort, social isolation, loss of confidence, and lead to other health problems. Nevertheless, most oral health conditions can be prevented and treated during their initial stages.

WOHD serves as a platform to increase awareness and educate individuals on the importance of maintaining good oral health, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to do so. The goal is to inspire a change in mindset and emphasize the value of oral health in leading a longer, happier life. The upcoming three-year theme is “Be proud of your mouth,” a simple but powerful message.

To attain and sustain good oral health, it is necessary to implement the following practices:

  • Brush with fluoridated toothpaste for two minutes, twice daily.
  • Visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning.
  • Consume a well-balanced diet, low in sugar, high in fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid all tobacco products.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Use protective gear like a mouthguard while participating in sports or riding bicycles to minimize the likelihood of injury.

Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being, and reducing risk factors for oral diseases can help prevent other serious health conditions. This WOHD, the Australian Dental Foundation joins the global campaign by being proud of their mouth and taking action to support their oral health and well-being.
