More than 87,000 hospitalisations for dental issues could have been prevented in Australia between 2022 and 2023, a staggering statistic that serves as a critical warning. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has particularly highlighted the vulnerability of the older Australians: 18% of all these cases involved people aged 65 or older, positioning them as the second most affected group nationwide.
The situation is most acute across three states: New South Wales (NSW) records the highest number of occurrences, followed by Victoria (VIC) and Queensland (QLD), making things more difficult for seniors living in these regions. Although free or low-cost public dental services are available in these areas, patients must first meet specific eligibility criteria, which often creates a barrier to access.
As a possible solution, the Australia Dental Foundation offers specialised services for seniors in these three states. Their key differentiator is the accessibility designed for this group, who can receive care wherever they are thanks to a partnership with Mobile Dental Care SA (MDCSA).
Currently, retirement and lifestyle villages can benefit from the service. The initiative has generated a significant impact: so far in 2025, almost 10 thousand patients have already benefited.
