What are fissure sealants and how do they help protect teeth?
Fissure sealants are a preventative dental treatment used to help protect teeth from decay.
The chewing surfaces of back teeth naturally have deep grooves, known as fissures, where food and bacteria can become trapped. These areas can be difficult to clean properly with a toothbrush.
A fissure sealant is applied over these grooves to create a thin protective barrier, helping reduce the risk of decay developing.
Fissure sealants are commonly used for children and teenagers, particularly on newly erupted permanent molars, although they may also be suitable for adults depending on individual needs.
Some sealants also release fluoride. SDI’s Conseal F is a fluoride-releasing fissure sealant designed to flow into small pits and grooves, helping support preventive dental care.
