Australian Dental Foundation Brings Smiles to Children in Vietnam

The Australian Dental Foundation (ADFi) is proud to support vulnerable communities wherever the need exists. Recently, we donated toothpaste to a social home in Vietnam that provides a safe place for children who have experienced significant hardship.

While often referred to as an orphanage, the social home cares not only for children without parents, but also for those from families facing extreme financial hardship or difficult circumstances where they are unable to provide adequate care. For many of these children, the home offers stability, education and the opportunity for a brighter future.

The challenges these children face are significant. Some children around nine years of age have never attended school, while others in their mid-teens are only just beginning first grade. Alongside literacy and cultural education, students are encouraged to develop practical skills through vocational training in areas such as hairdressing, cooking and baking, motor repair, and textiles, helping prepare them for independent futures. The home also provides dedicated classes for children with additional needs and includes a large community hall used for educational activities and events.

Unlike many institutions, the social home receives little to no government funding. Instead, it relies almost entirely on the generosity of charities and donors, including APA, a French charitable organisation, and many French families who continue to provide ongoing support.

Oral health remains one of the home’s greatest challenges. Caring for approximately 100 to 150 children, staff explained that many have untreated tooth decay and have never visited a dentist. Previous dental outreach has been delivered through a mobile dental van, with volunteer teams spending several days treating every child requiring care. During the summer months, classes operate on half-day schedules, making access to dental services more manageable.

The Foundation’s toothpaste donation is a simple but meaningful step towards improving daily oral hygiene and helping prevent further dental disease. Preventive care plays a vital role in reducing the burden of tooth decay, particularly in communities where access to regular dental treatment is limited.

This initiative also represents the beginning of a growing connection with the community. One of our supporters has a sister who is a dentist and will be visiting Vietnam later this year, while their partner’s extended family, including doctors, nurses and teachers, have generously offered to assist with local travel, community engagement and charitable connections. In addition, an Australian high school group visits the social home every December to provide ongoing support to the children.

At ADFi, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up with a healthy smile. By working alongside local communities, volunteers and generous supporters, we hope this donation is just the first step in making a lasting difference to the lives of these remarkable children.
