In many parts of the world, access to something as simple as a toothbrush or basic dental care is not guaranteed. A recent toothpaste donation in Uganda is one way the Australian Dental Foundation is helping bridge this gap, delivering essential oral health products to communities in need.

During a recent trip to Uganda, Australian Dental Foundation volunteer Molly Sweeney distributed dental and hygiene products to local communities using supplies generously donated through the Foundation. Her visit helped deliver essential items directly to those who need them most, transforming contributions from Australia into practical, on the ground support.
The need for this kind of support is significant. In Uganda, around 40% of the population experiences oral pain or discomfort, highlighting the widespread impact of untreated conditions (World Health Organization, 2024). Good oral health is closely linked to overall health, wellbeing, and confidence, yet many conditions remain unaddressed despite being largely preventable and treatable in their early stages. Expanding access to basic oral health resources is critical to improving outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.
This gap has real consequences. Oral diseases remain widespread, yet they are largely preventable with early intervention and access to basic hygiene products. In Uganda, untreated dental caries affects an estimated 38.3% of children, while access to treatment and early detection services remains limited. Basic oral healthcare procedures, including emergency care and restorative treatment, are often unavailable in primary care settings. In many cases, even fluoride toothpaste is unaffordable, requiring an average of 6.6 days of labour to purchase a yearly supply for one person (World Health Organization, 2022).

For communities facing these challenges, small interventions can make a meaningful difference. Donated supplies provide not only immediate support, but also an opportunity to improve long term health outcomes through prevention and education.
The work carried out by volunteers and supporters plays a critical role in addressing these inequalities. By delivering resources directly to underserved communities, international outreach programs help bridge gaps in access and bring care to where it is needed most.
The Australian Dental Foundation remains committed to improving oral health outcomes both locally and globally. Through partnerships, donations, and volunteer efforts, the Foundation continues to support communities who face significant barriers to care.
